Music videos are another form of art Lady Gaga uses as a way to express herself through religion, and they are, much like her lyrics, also a reflection of her true Roman Catholic beliefs. Below are several music videos in which she uses the Catholic religion as a symbol or metaphor.

Alejandro

Alejandro is one of the most prominent examples of how Lady Gaga uses religion in her art. Whether it is used as a personal expression, a religious statement or even for shock value, it is a common symbol in her work and the music video for Alejandro is no exception. There are several images in the musc video that allude to religious imagery. One scene in particular depicts Gaga dressed as a nun in a red latex habit, swallowing rosary beads. This scene garnered much attention, with many critisizing her for using blasphemy to create controversy.

Steven Klein, the director of the music video, has said that the scene showing Gaga swallowing the rosary beads was not, despite what critics had to say, a simply calculated move to garner controversy. He said the scene was a representation of Gaga's wish to take in the holy, into her body, and about the contrast between darkness and light in her life. Whether or not this scene, along with many others in the music video, were used to create shock value or not, they are all Roman Catholic symbols which are reflective of the religion Gaga practices in her personal life.

Judas

The music video for Gaga's song Judas is equally as religious as the lyrics of the song itself. She uses the Biblical characters Jesus, Judas and Mary to tell the story of a modern love story. Watch below:

This music video follows a woman (Mary Magdalene) who is experiencing an inner conflict regarding who she should love versus who she truly loves. She knows that she should be with Jesus, but despite the fact that Judas has wronged her, she still finds herself attracted to and wanting Judas. She understands that Judas has wronged her and is not someone she should be in love with, but she somehow still finds herself coming back to him, despite the controversy it may cause. There are several scenes throughout the video that reference aspects of the Catholic religion, but in a modern light.

This song and video, symbolizing the attractions we experience towards people we know are bad for us, as well as giving into our darkest desires and following your heart over your head, is created through the use of Catholic references, which are coherent with Gaga's own personal beliefs. This further proves that the religion an artist uses as an artistic reference point or the beliefs they portray in the media, are reflective of their own personal beliefs.
